A religion for the 21st century: Scientology

Great story about Dianetics and Scientology in the North County Times!
What We Believe: The Church of Scientology
By: RUTH MARVIN WEBSTER - Staff Writer
Questions of faith and religion aren't usual topics of Hollywood buzz. Drug use, infidelity, weight and cosmetic surgical procedures are.But any tidbit about the Church of Scientology or its high-profile celebrity believers seem to be the exception, attracting attention at every turn.

First there was the controversy in Germany, which in December declared Scientology unconstitutional and banned it. Then there was the release of Andrew Morton's unauthorized biography of actor Tom Cruise, which coincided with the broadcast of a nine-minute video of Cruise extolling the virtues of the faith, viewed by millions of people around the world before it was pulled from YouTube.

But more than material for late-night talk hosts, the Church of Scientology is the belief system of more than 3.5 million Americans, including more than 18,000 people in the San Diego area, according to Dave Meyer, president of the Church of Scientology of San Diego.
Scientology has been called by some the only major new religion to emerge in the 20th century with no heritage from any mainstream Judeo-Christian faiths. Nor is it connected with the churches of Christian Science or Religious Science. Others, however, say Scientology is not a religion because of its methods, including the practice of charging for some of its services.
'We so respect him'
Scientology grew out of a best-selling book called "Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health," published in 1950. The book includes a concept of God expressed as the urge toward existence as infinity or the supreme being.
The author of "Dianetics" was L. Ron Hubbard, a filmmaker, aviator, adventurer, photographer, philosopher and expert mariner. The founder of the Church of Scientology, he is considered a genius by his followers.
Among those followers are Kathy and Ed Marsh of Escondido. The library in their guesthouse is home to thousands of first edition and signed volumes, many written by Hubbard. The room also contains pieces of Hubbard memorabilia that Ed Marsh, a Scientologist since 1969, has collected over the years, such as a package of Hubbard's favorite Kool cigarettes and his early aviator helmet.
But Scientology is not about worshipping Hubbard, said Meyer, who has been the president of the Church of Scientology of San Diego for the last two years.
"We so respect him (Hubbard) for his deeds and accomplishments ... and for his caring factor," said Meyer.>>

Clear and Aesthetics

One of my favorite quotes from the Dianetics book goes as follows:

The glory and color of childhood vanishes as one progresses into later years. But the strange part of it is that htis glamour and beauty and sensitivity to life are not gone. They are encysted. one of the most remarkable experiences a Clear has is to find, in the process of therapy, that he is recovering appreciation of beauty in the world.

The Scientology Basics

The recently released Dianetics the Modern Science of Mental Health book was fascinating to read, I was riveted to it all the way through. For the first time I have a complete understanding of this vital technology.

I am on the book Science of Survival now, which is a total pleasure to read. My understanding of the different levels of the tone scale and how people manifest them is much higher.

I have noticed that reading these books has increased my understanding of myself and my own life as well, so my control and capabilities are steadily increasing.

Mr. David Miscavige has accomplished a tremendous achievement releasing the Basics of Scientology.

What is the Scope of Dianetics?

L. Ron Hubbard began the Dianetics book with a chapter titled "The Scope of Dianetics" with one of the most famous quotations of this book—one of my favorites:

"A science of mind is a goal which has engrossed thousands of generations of Man. Armies, dynasties and whole civilizations have perished for the lack of it. Rome went to dust for the want of it. China swims in blood for the need of it. And down in the arsenal is an atom bomb, its hopeful nose full-armed in ignorance of it."

Dianetics is just such a science of the Mind, and with the June release, by David Miscavige, of the new editions of all basic Dianetics & Scientology books and lectures, it has really come into its own.

And none too soon. The condition of our world is, if anything, far worse than that of 1950. Because added to the threat of nuclear annihilation, we have also managed in the intervening 57 years to destroy our environment, wipe out countless species, and invent or fail to contain (depending on whether you are a conspiracy theorist or not) AIDS, which is causing a genocide in Third World countries.

Anyone unwilling to simply stand by and watch this continue down at the breakneck speed at which it is traveling would do well to read Dianetics.

Dianetics Boston

I was happy to see Dianetics Boston promoting the film Dianetics the Evolution of a Science. It's a very well made, entertaining short film, that packs such an incredible message.

Dianetics is so simple yet so powerful, literally anyone who can read can pick it up and in a matter of hours learn how to help someone else and get help him/herself in return.

Dianetics and Emotion

It wasn't until I got well into Science of Survival in my study of the Scientology and Dianetics Basics that I realized how much this book follows on from Dianetics. Of course it would be obvious to anyone who looked at it, but I'd never read these books in chronological sequence before, and although Science of Survival has long been one of my favorite books, I didn't see that it had such an intimate relationship with Dianetics.

I had always wondered what it was that caused some people to pick up the mannerisms of others and act a bit like their own version of someone -- usually of one of their parents or the leader of their group or the boss at work, It puzzled me that they would sound like this person and move like him, etc. In reading one of the chapters in this book, not only did I understand this but I realized what can be done to help a person be himself and why that's important from a perspective a spiritual gains.

And one other point about these materials--when I heard David Miscavige describe the care that went into restoring these books to their original intended content I was impressed by all the work and care that went into it. But when I started reading Science of Survival that turned into awe, not just for the work Mr. Miscavige and the Sea Organization put into doing this (the religious order of the Scientology religion) but for Ron. I always loved this book, but now it is incredible how easy it is to understand and how much I'm getting out of it. I look forward to the time I get to study my books every day.

Feeling Grumpy?

Ever feel grumpy for no good reason?

I used to have a friend who was just not worth talking to before 10:30 in the morning. In fact I learned that if I wanted to avoid a nasty fight it was best to pretend I didn't know her until noon. When I forgot to carry that out I was always sorry.

It wasn't till I read Dianetics that I finally understood what was going on with her. It's really simple, actually. But you have to read the book to get it. (And, by the way, for anyone who read the book before wait till you read the new edition, released last month by David Miscavige as part of the Scientology Basics. It's SO much easier to read with the way they have typeset and presented it. And the glossary is fabulous).

I see people getting into fights sometimes and wonder what my life would be like without having read this book. It's such a relief to understand simple things like that. Makes me feel so much more stable.

Dianetics

Dianetics the Modern Science of Mental Health has been released with the rest of the Basic Books and Lectures of L. Ron Hubbard. This book is intensely interesting and the technology given in it unquestionably is needed by every person.

Mr. David Miscavige is greatly appreciated for his care and hard work in making these materials available.

Where Did the Joy Go?

Here's something that really struck me while reading Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health (the new edition released last month by David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center).

"The glory and color of childhood vanishes as one progresses into later years. But the strange part of it is that this glamour and beauty and sensitivity to life are not gone. They are encysted. One of the most remarkable experiences a Clear has is to find, in the process of therapy, that he is recovering appreciation of the beauty in the world."

Those "helpful" voices in your head are a hidden menace

"I know I can't do this," or "He couldn't be interested in someone like me," or "Damn it, what's wrong with me? Why did I say that," and even worse "I know I'll never get over this," "I'm such a dumb f**k".... Sound too familiar?

Even if you never hear this kind of thing rattling around your head, and you just sometimes think out loud or talk to yourself when you're in a tight spot, you might be surprised to find out that these "helpful" voices are actually a hidden menace too, cutting down your own drive and intelligence.

On page 107 of the new edition of Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health, (released in late June/early July by David Miscavige ) L. Ron Hubbard explains how these mental "circuits" are set up and how they parasite off your own native horsepower.

Law of Affinity

Here's one of my favorite quotes from Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health.

"Man must be in affinity with Man to survive."

May sound idealistic, but it is nonetheless true. It is also a commentary on the human condition in an abberrated state (a state characterized by departure from rationality). But do you have any idea how many wars are being carried on even as I write and you read this posting?

Goes back to the reason I say Dianetics is so important, and another of my favorite quotes from this book

"Man's primary fight is not with Man: that is insanity. Man's primary fight is with those elements which oppress him as a species and bar his thrust toward high goals."

As I read these books I am once more (and continually) reminded of what a genius L. Ron Hubbard is. (and, by the way, this is the nicest book I've owned. This new edition released by David Miscavige in July along with copies of all the basic Scientology and Dianetics books and lectures from 1948 through 1956, is a delight to read!)

Dianetics Harlem

This article appeared today on CityLimits.org

Seems the news about the new Church of Scientology and Dianetics Center of Harlem is creating a lot of interest, and that's just great!

Dianetics is so effective, and so easy to learn to use, and provides so much help, I am thrilled to see it making it into the New York limelight!

The first thing many subway riders hear as they exit the subway station at 125th Street and Lexington Avenue often is, “Ma’am, do you have stress in your life?”

It's an initial hint of one newer brand of religious outreach that continues on street level – and 125th Street in particular has seen its share of street-corner religion, from mainline Protestant denominations to the Nation of Islam. The latest comer is the Church of Scientology in Harlem, which last week purchased two new properties on the street and is planning a major recruitment drive. The church is significantly enlarging its space and programming – and nearly doubling its office staff, from 43 to about 80. The church’s growth comes at time when real estate pressures have created challenges for some smaller religious institutions, but with support and financial backing from its California base, the Church of Scientology in Harlem is planning to expand.

Scientology is news because it provides so much help. And now more than ever. The Harlem church has a very active Volunteer Ministers program centered around the Scientology Handbook There is a whole new series of courses available at the Harlem church and all Scientology churches that cover the basics of Scientology making it very easy for anyone to learn them and get the help they need in life.

Dianetics and Scientology books and taped lectures. WOW, What an Experience!

I just finished reading the newly released version of Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health today. What a read!

To describe L. Ron Hubbard as a genius is such an understatement. How he broke through the built-in protective mechanisms of the reactive mind to come up with this technology is an adventure story in itself (that's covered in Dianetics: the Evolution of a Science, which is a great read too!)

I learned so much about myself, I hardly know where to start.

It's funny, but as I read along I found myself feeling better and better about myself, and understanding why people react the way they do, recognizing patterns in my own life and in the lives of some of my closest friends, my sisters and my folks.

I started right on the next book (Science of Survival) and found, to my surprise, L. Ron Hubbard was still talking about Dianetics in that book! I hadn't realized it was a Dianetics book too.

I have to say that when I saw the event where David Miscavige released these books and taped lectures I was impressed, but now that I've started studying the materials I can really see why Mr. Miscavige was so excited about what has been done to restore these!

Dianetics!--The release of the Basic Books by L. Ron Hubbard

If you know a Scientologist, chances are you've already heard the buzz. Last month, David Miscavige spoke at an international event which was promoted before hand as an announcement that would change the future for Scientology forever.

May sound a bit dramatic, but when I saw the event I saw exactly why he said this.

Mr. Miscavige announced the completion of a tremendous project, to go back to the original tape recordings from which the basic books of L. Ron Hubbard were transcribed and correct the errors, restore the original edits Mr. Hubbard had made and put out the books in the exact form that LRH had always intended.

He also announced the two new publishing facilities in LA and Copenhagen that makes it possible to produce books on demand, and raises the bar on quality.

Now I've started reading the books and I can see that it is exactly as he stated!

Idi Amin - What Motivates Such a Man?

Congratulations to Forest Whitaker on his Oscar.

What drives a man to the level of cruelty and savagery of Idi Amin? Without an understanding of the Reactive Mind, seeing someone act as he did could confirm one's distrust in his fellow man and make one believe that man's basic nature is evil.

Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health is an important book to read, to understand what drives a man like that.

Great story about the Baton Rouge Mission in the Advocate.com today. Googled it in Google News:

The volunteer ministers the Church of Scientology brings to respond to disasters come out of many walks of life.

Dentists, office managers, roofers and the actress who gives voice to Bart Simpson all donned the church’s bright yellow T-shirts and went to work.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, about 1,000 volunteer ministers from across the United States and Canada came to Louisiana in clusters of about 300 at any given time, church officials said. They worked with other faith groups and the Red Cross to assist and in some cases run the shelters.

While other faith groups that responded — Catholics, Baptists, Methodists — already had a large presence in the Gulf Coast region, the Church of Scientology is relatively small.

However, the visibility and goodwill earned during relief efforts following hurricanes Katrina and Rita created momentum that has helped the church open new missions in the region and see increased interest at the ones it already had.

“We grow as much as we help people,” explained Craig Gehring, an employee at the Church of Scientology’s Mission in Baton Rouge. >>

Dianetics Used in Disaster Relief

Scientology Volunteer Ministers use Dianetics techniques to help people recover from otherwise permanent effects of trauma.

The relief people experience is life saving.

Here's a story that appeared on the Scientology Press Office that illustrates the point.>>
